Today, Mayor Ed Murray issued the following statement after President Trump signed a revised version of his executive order that bars immigrants and refugees from predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States:
“Temporarily shutting down the nation’s refugee program and simply taking one country off the travel ban list doesn’t change the ignorance at the heart of President Trump’s order—it is still bigoted. Refugees escaping life-threatening conflict must be able to turn to America and immigrants must be allowed every opportunity to pursue the promise of our country. This new order is out of line with America’s values and is once again likely out of line with the Constitution of the United States.
“As I said last month during my State of the City speech at North Seattle’s Idris Mosque, while the President is busy slamming doors and building walls, we are opening our arms. We will do all in our power to ensure that Seattle lives up to these values as a welcoming city.”
President Trump’s executive order imposes a 90-day ban on new visas for citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Additionally, the measure suspends the nation’s refugee program for 120 days and reduces the number of refugees allowed into the United States to 50,000 a year, which is less than half of the number granted entry annually under President Obama.
