Seattle praises Obama’s Clean Power Plan

    10/23/2015

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray today praised President Obama’s Clean Power Plan that limits carbon emissions from existing power plants.

“The President’s Clean Power Plan is a tremendous step forward as we aim to grow our clean energy economy,” said Murray. “In the lead up to next month’s UN climate negotiations in Paris, this move signals that the U.S. will play a leading role to respond to climate change, the global environmental challenge of our times.”

Seattle City Light was the first carbon-neutral electric utility in the nation.

“Seattle City Light has long advocated for action to address climate change. We support President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, including EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act,” said Jim Baggs, Seattle City Light Interim General Manager and CEO. “We are confident this final rule provides the states the flexibility needed to design programs to address state-specific characteristics and impacts. City Light looks forward to working with Washington state and other stakeholders as we develop a strong and effective state implementation plan.”

“Seattle has long been a leader in climate action, but we know cities cannot do it alone. We are thrilled to see this important step forward from President Obama,” said Jessica Finn Coven, Director of the Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment. “This federal action will help drive emissions reductions across the country.”
